چکیده

The primary removal of product water in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is through the cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) which necessitates the understanding of vapor and liquid transport of water through porous media. In this investigation, the effect of microporous layer (MPL) coatings, GDL thickness, and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) loading on the effective water vapor diffusion coefficient is studied. MRC Grafil, SGL Sigracet, and Toray TGP-H GDL samples are tested experimentally with and without MPL coatings and varying PTFE loadings. A dynamic diffusion test cell is developed to produce a water vapor concentration gradient across the GDL and induce diffusion mass transfer. Tests are conducted at ambient temperature and flow rates of 500, 625, and 750 sccm. MPL coatings and increasing levels of PTFE content introduce significant resistance to diffusion while thickness has negligible effects. a 2011 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. Investigation of Water Vapor Diffusivity through Gdl of a Pemfc

Water transport through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is of critical importance in the operation of the fuel cell. In this study, the transport of water vapor through the GDL is investigated. A one-dimensional, single-phase heat and mass transfer model is developed to investigate the diffusivity of water vapor through the GDL of a PEMFC. An experime...

Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Gas Diffusion Layer with Semicircular Prominences on Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Performance and Species Distribution

A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with both gas distribution flow channels and Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) is developed. A set of conservation equation is numerically solved by developing a CFD code based on the finite volume technique and SIMPLE algorithm. In this research, some parameters like oxygen consumption, water...

Water Management in A PEMFC: Water Transport Mechanism and Material Degradation in Gas Diffusion Layers

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) directly convert the chemical energy of the reactants into electrical energy and usually consist of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) sandwiched between two catalyst layers (CLs), two porous gas diffusion layers (GDLs) often coated with a microporous layer (MPL) on the CL side, and two bipolar plates with embedded gas channels. Protons and electro...

Modeling and Simulations of Pemfcs Operating with Periodically Purged Dead-ended Anode Channels

PEMFC operation with dead-ended anode has inherent transient behavior: the cell operates between purge cycles that replenish fuel and discharge accumulated gases, such as nitrogen and water vapor, and liquid water. During the operation when the anode exit is shut, gases that cross-over from the cathode accumulate and stratify in the anode channels above the liquid water when the gravity is acti...
